Balanced Rocks (30 sec. 2019) Sculptures created and shot by Lester Alfonso during a summer’s day canoe trip at Silent Lake Provincial Park.
The iPhone is sun-soaked and wrapped in a Ziploc bag. To protect it from the water, it’s double wrapped and locked. It’s summer, —L and I spend the day on a rock watching the clouds, basking in the sunlight, while I intermittently dredge mossy rocks out of the hundred-year-old shallows of a random shore at Silent Lake. I won’t take a video until later.
I’m a rock star. The underwater rocks look like jewels in the light; exposed wet rock to dry. I balance them with each other. I create shapes that begin to look like creatures. I lazily invent stories about them in my head while I find my rocks and balances.
A visit to Planet Earth. This is how I leave it. I’m driven to create. I’m in my flow; I’m in my zone. Nothing is permanent, I have to let go but I can’t leave my rock friends without taking a video. I wonder how long they would last standing there.
More soon! Stay tuned! —LA
