There was a Cabaret, trailer (30 sec. 2005) Directed, shot, and edited by Lester Alfonso to promote the digital release in 2015 for the 10th anniversary.
Typewriter clackity-clack: Day 71. And it was the end of the world… types Cliff Bradshaw — the American writer who tried to capture the world around him through his carefully chosen words. I can relate to this character a lot.
Today’s video is a trailer I created to promote the Vimeo On-Demand release in 2015 of this privately commissioned documentary. Stage director and producer Joe Shulman approached me after the success of Backstage at The Sound of Music in Maynooth to do the same with Cabaret. It’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse at a community theatre group production of the musical. The play from 1966 was mounted at the historic Arlington Hotel in the small town of Maynooth, Ontario back in 2005 but I was not part of the cast this time. Although we aimed to make a kind of sequel, my detachment from the cast gave the film a different tone; that taught me a big lesson.
It’s a different project altogether when the camera is handled by someone from within the group. It’s a different project when an outsider comes in with their perspective and gaze.
I’ll be posting the full movie and more of my thoughts on the project very soon so stay tuned! —LA
